Vitamin E and Erectile Dysfunction

Copy of 126 Vitamin E Erectile Dysfunction

Can Vitamin E possibly treat erectile dysfunction? This is one of the questions that you can find online especially since ED is a condition that is caused by physical conditions like sleep disorders, heart problems, or diabetes. As vitamin manufacturers are always marketing their products as a great way to prevent and fight physical conditions, can we really use Vitamin E to treat erectile dysfunction?

What is ED?

ED or erectile dysfunction is a condition where a man is unable to function sexually due to lack of penile hardness. It means the penis is unable to stay erect even when sexually stimulated. This condition is attributed to a lot of factors such as physical conditions, stress, and trauma. Age is also considered as a factor hence men in their 60s often suffer from ED. According to studies, at least 30 million men in the US alone are suffering from impotence such as erectile dysfunction.

Erectile dysfunction occurs because the penile muscle is not getting enough blood during sexual stimulation. This is caused by clogged blood vessels or thinning blood vessels in the penile muscle that blocks the blood from flowing smoothly. It is also caused by the PDE5 enzyme. Most ED drugs are known to inhibit the PDE5 enzyme as well as helps the penile muscle relax. Herbal supplements claim to do the same thing.

Why Vitamin E?

Vitamin E is said to be a good arousal vitamin because it helps in the production of prostaglandins hormones. Prostaglandins hormones are known to boost sex drive. Another effect of Vitamin E is the thinning of the blood. It also improves blood circulation especially in areas where blood circulation is needed. Here are some of the benefits of using Vitamin E:

  • It helps in preventing diabetes
  • It helps in preventing prostate enlargement
  • It improves blood circulation
  • It boosts sex drive

Foods rich in vitamin E include nuts such as almonds as well as vegetables like broccoli and spinach.

The Connection between Vitamin E and ED

We found a study that tried to evaluate the effect of vitamin E in the treatment of erectile dysfunction. In the study, the researchers looked at the effect of vitamin E in the treatment of erectile dysfunction among elderly men. This study was conducted using rats as subjects.

In the study, the subjects were given 80 IU of vitamin E every day for three weeks along with a dose of sildenafil citrate. During the trial, the researchers measured the nitric oxide production, GSH levels, and SOD activity of the corpus cavemosum of the subjects. Intracavernosal pressure/mean arterial pressure were also measured.

The effect of the study revealed that vitamin E along with the antioxidant therapy improved the age-associated erectile dysfunction. This can be more effective when used for a longer time. Still, the study is not conclusive with the effect of low-dose sildenafil and vitamin E in treating aged-caused erectile dysfunction. Remember that this study used rats and not human. The effect of vitamin E on elderly men with ED might still be different.
